Why these valves fail
When a drain or blowdown valve opens against full boiler pressure, water flashes to steam and accelerates through the seat. That combination of high velocity, temperature cycling and particles erodes conventional seats. A valve that no longer seals passes steam continuously — wasting fuel, eroding downstream piping and making isolation for maintenance unsafe.
What severe-service ball valves do differently
- Metal seats with hard coatings resist erosion where soft seats would fail.
- Tight shut-off is designed in, so the valve can be relied on for isolation.
- Quarter-turn operation means the sealing surfaces are not dragged across each other the way gate and globe valves are when cycled under flow.
- Repairable designs allow seats and balls to be refurbished.
Typical locations in a power plant
| Location | Duty |
|---|---|
| Boiler drains and vents | Start-up drains, superheater and reheater drains |
| Continuous and intermittent blowdown | Controlling solids in boiler water |
| Turbine drains | Removing condensate during warm-up |
| Feedwater and steam isolation | Critical isolation where leakage is costly |
Beyond power: slurry and process isolation
Severe-service metal-seated ball valves are also used for abrasive slurries, autoclave isolation and other erosive services in metals, mining and refining.
Total cost of ownership
A severe-service valve costs more to buy than a standard valve, but the comparison that matters includes steam losses through leaking valves, repeated repairs, unplanned outages and safe isolation. In high-energy drain lines the payback is often fast.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a gate or globe drain valve with a ball valve?
In many cases yes; face-to-face dimensions, end connections and operation must be reviewed. Send us the line data and existing valve details.
