Geared Motor Types: Helical, Parallel-Shaft, Bevel and Worm Compared

A geared motor combines an electric motor and a gearbox to deliver the speed and torque a machine needs. The gear type affects efficiency, size, mounting and running cost.

Efficiency matters for running cost

Helical and bevel gears transmit power with little loss. Worm gears slide rather than roll, so more energy turns into heat, especially at high ratios. For drives that run many hours a day, a helical or helical-bevel gearbox often saves energy compared with a worm gearbox of similar output — combined with an efficient IE3 or IE4 motor, the saving can be significant over the drive's life.

Sizing a geared motor

Exciter gearboxes for vibrating screens

Vibrating screens in mining, cement and aggregates use exciter gearboxes that generate the screen's vibration. They run continuously under heavy load, so robust bearings, lubrication and regular maintenance are essential.

C-adapter gearboxes

A gearbox with a motor adapter (IEC or NEMA C-face) accepts a standard motor, which can simplify spares and replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace an old worm gearbox with a helical-bevel unit?

Often yes, if output speed, torque, shaft and mounting dimensions are matched. Send us the nameplate and machine details.
